    HK's public hospitals

Some would argue public hospitals should offer a no frills access to medical treatment with a focus on treatment of the illness rather than if your pillows are fluffy enough.

Obviously medical matters can rightly be very emotive given that it is sometimes a life or death situation.

What has been your experience of HK's public hospitals?

The problem isn't that they provide uniformly kick-ass treatment but that the pillows aren't fluffy or that the nurses are too brusque.

It's that the waits for many procedures are so long that you can literally die whilst waiting for the first/next step in your treatment -- unless you know a doctor or nurse and can have your treatment expedited.

Luckily I've only had one experience quite a few years back.

    - turned up at the hospital,
    - saw the triage nurse (receptionist)
    - went and sat back down in the waiting area
    - name was next called
    - saw a doctor
    - sent straight to a ward (15 mins after walking in the door)
    - 14 days of great medical care with barrage of tests, good banter, OK food etc
    - 3 months of efficient and pleasant outpatient care in a crumbly 1950's building

I had good treatment last year, picked up by ambulance, checked within 10 minutes of being put in the triage place, CAT scan done within the hour..all the med's/supplies necessary and follow up appointments all scheduled.
    $100 (by octopus no less!)

Good in my experience if your priority is good treatment and services. Fire me, that's all i care about.

Not especially good in terms of aesthetics, polite smiling staff and quiet well mannered patients. But if that is your priority when you're in hospital then count yourself lucky!

There's only been one time I had to go to A & E and kept overnight and that was when I fell, tumbled down a slope and nearly broke my neck.

I was rushed through and had the CAT scans and x-rays and kept overnight for observation. I was given an injection painkiller which didn't work and didn't sleep much due to pain and the grannies grumbling in the next bed but hey- it's not a 5 star hotel!

They wanted to keep me in for a few days for further observation but I discharged myself and had a final x-ray before they let me go. It was my own responsibility for follow-up treatment.

I'm happier being treated here than I would in the UK.

My experience is they are very good. On a par if not superior to the NHS.

Been plenty of times via the A &E route.

My only tip is make sure you have a friend to deliver some food to you once a day, as public hospital food here is quite horrid.
