    Complicated Wisdom Teeth

Few weeks ago, i discovered that I have a badly decayed wisdom tooth. So I decided to get it check out at quality health care. When I went to the dentist and took an X-ray, he realised that my wisdom teeth are either fully buried or partially buried in gum. Hence he referred me to a specialist. I then made an appointment with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (referred, he is quality health care's specialist) who took an jaw x ray for me. He told me that my bottom wisdom teeth have curved roots and are very close to my nerves, which made them complicated to extract. i was then sent to central to do a ct scan. In total, it costed me 2600 hkd for consultation and imagings.

I went back to him today to check my ct scans, he suggested that i should remove 6 of my teeth, which includes 4 wisdom teeth, one baby tooth and one impacted tooth. One or my wisdom tooth is still fully buried in my gum and i see no point of removal, but he said its necessary.

    Two quotes were given:

Quote one: 60000 hkd for removal of all 6 teeth in hospital at once. General anaesthetic will be given. As I am alone in Hong Kong and have no idea how I would react to the anaesthesia, I don't think this is a good idea.

Quote two is approximately 50 percent cheaper, which would take three attempts with each attempt removing two teeth. Local anaesthetic will be given. And his price are:

Bottom wisdom teeth: 9000 hkd each (close to the nerves)
One impacted bottom tooth: 9000 hkd (close to the nerves)
Top wisdom teeth: 4100 each (small surgery to remove, not critical)
    One Baby tooth: 2800

So I am really wondering, am I getting milked. Is he trying to rip me off? Or seriously that my teeth are so unique.

Please give me some advise or suggestion. Much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm missing something here... you have one decayed tooth which could perhaps beneficially be extracted. That's the only problem you have. Why fix loads of other non-problems?

OK - I had a similar issue when I was in my 20's. They told me at the time that i should get all 4 wisdom teeth extracted, at the same time, in hospital but that only two were urgent at the time. To save money and because I was scared, I opted for just the 2. A few years later, #3 became a problem and ended up being extracted in the chair by a local dentist - - horrible experience - much pain and another day at home to recover. A couple of years after that, #4 because a problem while on HOLIDAY! I ended up having it extracted at great expense in Switzerland and missing a couple of days of my hiking holiday recovering.

My advice - just get them all done at once, in hospital with the general. Having them done without general is horrible. Being asleep is the way to go! The first 2 were by far the easiest and best experience! You avoid a heap of future pain and expense. You don't need wisdom teeth, you can't see them and don't use them for chewing. I suspect this is why they are suggesting getting the whole lot fixed at once.

Get a second opinion, not one from Geoexpat. HK Santiorium hospital has a few maxillofacial surgeons - http://www.hksh.com/en/doctors/#c10

I had this done in my early 20's, 4 impacted wisdom teeth. they had to shatter the teeth in the jaw then take out the pieces because they were so close to the nerves. It was done under a general. The pain after was horrendous and I have a week off. One nerve was damaged, fortunately I regained feeling after 12 months.

I would check out another dentist or two before agreeing to anything. I had a wisdom tooth that was embedded in the gum and it was taken out under anaesthesia in the dentist's chair. No need to go to a hospital. This was done by a fantastic Iranian specialist in Dubai who also proceeded to extract one of my back teeth painlessly ( oh I loved that anaesthesia! No reaction except I never felt so relaxed in my life!) thanks to a bloody muck up job by some NHS dentist in the UK wh fitted an ill fitting crown over that tooth. As a result, said tooth became horribly infected.

Check out Smith and Jain at Century Square, 6 th flr, D'Aguilar Street, Central. They are excellent and not so expensive, and will work out a plan if you are on a strict budget. Unfortunately, I'm not covered by our medical insurance for dentistry, so I understand how you feel.

Re anaesthesia....do you have any prior allergy? If so, tell the dentist or specialist. If not, then don't worry.

Those who did it under general anaesthesia - did you have to stay at the hospital for a few days?

Went home a few hours later but was required to have a person with me to leave the hospital. Went straight to bed and slept it all off.

I am going through a similar situation myself.
I need to get one of my wisdom teeth removed as it is sideways and pushing at my bottom row of teeth. The dentist i use in Wan Chai has referred me to a specialist in Central as he wont do it himself. I don't have the specialists name at hand but can send when i get home if you want a second opinion.
