    Ban smoking in cars

The Tsang administration made great progress in demonizing smoking. Bans in public places, tax hikes and negative comments on smoking (except the few law makers who said tax hike were a tax on the poor so the poor should get more money).

A few territories in the world such as Atlantic Canada ban smoking in cars with minors. The UK may pass a law soon.

Unfortunately the current HK administration have more important things to focus on rather then the health of their citizens and the HK police are not willing to even enforce seat belt wearing for kids.

Do you think banning smoking in cars with a child present is a good idea or just un-enforceable authoritarian nonsense?

    It is a good idea.

    It's also unenforceable.

But they should start with insisting kids are strapped in.

Yes, we need more bans. Bring back the ban on buggery&sodomy, especially in cars and homes where children are within 500m. We dont want their impressionable minds polluted with such unsafe things.

Why stop there? Why not ban smoking in homes with children too?

I think we should ban trans fats from every home in Hong Kong. Gum too.
Can we please ban Alcohol while we are at it, especially in the presence of children.
Kissing : the gateway to premarital sex - definitely ban kissing in front of under 16s.

Has anyone been prosecuted for careless driving on the grounds that they're smoking?

Just to add...I think people who smoke around children should be arrested. It's child abuse.

Some people are very vocal about the state infringing on their 'rights' and less forthcoming about their responsibilities and seem to ignore that laws make society function.

For this issue isn't there a couple of 'rights' to consider

    1) The freedom for a person to smoke in their car
    2) The freedom of a child to breath smoke free air in a very confined space

Given the un-equal nature of parent child relationships, if society thinks that children are worth protecting then a law should be enacted as parents are not always rational or sensible. Enforcement is not just about getting the police to convict it is also about educating the society and setting up avenues to effectively report people who break the law.
