    Problem with backing up my DVD movies

    I'm having problems making a backup copy of a DVD that I have, and I have no idea how to resolve it. I have downloaded a software to decode the DVD, but my burner (using the Nero burner software) somehow thinks it is 6GB and wouldn't burn it on a blank 4G DVD disc, nor would it recognize a 8G DVD R DL disc that I bought today. Anyone know where I can get some help on this problem? Are there any shops in Wan Chai who might be able to look into this problem for me?

    have you already confirmed this is a 6gig D/L dvd that you are trying to copy?

    Try using another software to first dump the dvd into a .iso format, then use nero to burn the iso format onto your D/L dvd.

    If Nero is not recognizing your D/L blank dvd, it is possible that your version of nero is outdated and is not recognizing the newer D/L dvd, however, it should still recognize it as a generic D/L dvd, if it does not, I suggest first try updating nero, if all else fails, try obtaining a newer version of nero.

    Hope this helps.

    Can you confirm your DVD writer supports DL, if so, it could be the brand of the DL DVDR you've purchased, some cheaper brands are often not recognised in certain writers.

    You could try shrinking the DVD data down to 4GB if it's 6GB worth of data but this will of course affect the quality of the video dvdshrink.org: FREE Backup Solution for your DVD movies!.

    You could also try using different burning software to see if this helps (ie imgburn) The Official ImgBurn Website

    Imgburn will also allow you to check for any firmware updates for your drive, this has helped me in the past as it got my drive to recognise a spindle of cheap discs that it didn't recognise previous to the update.

    Checklist:

    * Dual-layer disks.
    * Dual-layer writable drive.
    * Software that supports writing to dual-layer disks.
    * File system that supports > 2GB files, or two DVD drives.

    For backing up a DVD try DVD Decryptor, for burning a DVD try ImgBurn. You probably need to buy a new dual-layer DVD writer?

    As SilverHK points out, DVD drive firmware needs to support the kind of disk you are using - the manufacturer and the speed you are attempting to write at. Sounds a bit strange but you can checkout the firmware history and see updates are just to support new media formats.

    Why would anyone (legally) want to make a backup of a DVD movie? The failure rate of DVDs is minuscule, so surely the cost of backing up all your movies must far exceed the cost of replacing any that fail?

    I'm assuming it's something like a wedding or sky-dive DVD.

    OK - I guess that makes sense. Surely then, as someone suggested, a dump to the PC and then burn from there would be easiest.

    Having not looked at this for a while I was pleasantly surprised to find the other day that I could get an internal LG DVD Rewriter with every DVD format up to 8.5GB DL discs for less than HK$200. That cured my data backup reticence instantly.

    Thanks so much for all your reply. I tried using another DVD burner software and it worked!
