    Cheap Smartphones - dodgy?

I'm looking at buying a new phone as mine is dying.

The Samsung model I'm interested in retails at fortress for about $2450. A little shop in the lanes in Central that I've used before has it for $2200.

Yesterday I was on Nathan road and dropped into Chungking mansions. A couple of the tiny import/export shops on the first floor there had the same handset at $1850

The packaging looked real, and I assume that the days of open counterfeits have passed so it's probably genuine - but I'm hesitating.

Has anyone here any experience or thoughts on buying from one of these places?
    Thanks

also samsung are not the most value for money in regards to entry level, ( low spec for the money), better if you consider, also entry level are usually weak and slow smartphones, while entry phones can decent, ie htc desire x ( cheap dual core) at HK$2380, or xperia neo l, great 4" lcd phone at HK$2000, or older flagship xperia arc ( great camera, bargain when it was last year at HK$4200) at sunning shatin at HK$2080

Thanks for the replies. The model I'm looking at is the Galaxy Ace 2 which gets good reviews for a mid- range phone - dual core, and will run the latest Android:

I'm happy it will do what I need - just wondering whethre the shops in Chungking are reliable - or likely to sell fake/grey market phones.

$1850 looks like parallel import or a 14 day lot, certainly not fake..You can always tell the difference between a fake and original if you do a bit more research before buying....2nd floor shops in chungking are reliable and i have not heard any bad remarks about them..still its better to be vigilant...

prices, and places to get them, pccw, off contract seems to be good place

btw, not the best value for money

a few honey dollars, htc desire x is twice as fast and powerful ( thus, less laggy) than novathur based ace 2

xperia j and xperia neo l much better screen size for same amount of money as well

This website is a fat lot use to an expat that doesn't read Chinese. Having said that, the business card I posted is too. But at $1600 I'm sure they can get someone to translate the shop locations

well, we are in hk after all, unless the op don't mind paying broadway/fortress prices, a bit of research or ask a friend is worth the a few hundreds to save on a budget phone.

clone phone/cheap identiclone android is not a great recommendation, based on two years ago, iphone clones was all the rage, but i note nowaday, they seem dead as dodo and HK$1600, that a hell of lot money for a no brander

    just for the op

cash cow is in wan chai computer cente, shop 164,
manu, wan chai computer cente shop 114
