imparanoic raises a good point. Different countries run on slightly different frequencies. Off memory there are minor differences between US and Asian ranges which would (to me) justify buying locally.

In fact, I regard smartphones as one of the class of device where a local warranty is worth securing. I'd only buy an unwarrantied phone if it had a massive discount.

This is not exactly correct. Just the initial SIM must be from that region. So if you buy an Asia phone it must be activated with an Asian SIM. After that it can be used anywhere.

Your point about different frequencies remains fully valid.

PS: I would go for the Nexus 5, again.
your not correct either, asia and more importantly so far has no region locking ( confirmed), us and uk has confirmed locking, but in the future, 4.4 firmware, there could implement this.

if the op ( who is not tech savvy) buys from a dodgy dealer in the states ( even amazon dealers can be dodgy, my brother was sold a used phone described as brand new on amazon uk), that's been already activated in us, then the phone can't be used in HK, ie, useless phone which can not be unlocked at all

    not tech-savvy AT ALL! :S

Just had a look at price.com.hk and amazon (main site not marketplace)...

willing to spend a bit more than original budget but still v confused.

ok, so basically USA phones will or will not work in HK because of region locking???

usa phones have a highly likely chance of NOT working (probably very few), Samsung and carriers lock some of the phones, technical differences in network

look how many threads relate to us iphones which locked ( in a different way) in HK

Reading links helps. If (and only if) the Samsung phone has a lock then you need an American SIM to unlock it. After that it works with any SIM.

I am not sure why you, or anybody for that matter, wants to buy a phone overseas. Any potential price advantage gets killed by the delivery cost. Go to Sincere, buy one there, and tell them to make it ready to use.

My recommendation :- Moto G, killer feature- it's fast and powerful phone, surpasses every else- disadvantages - no removeable battery and sd card, so if you listen of music or even watch video downloads, space will be limited,

My recommendation :- sony sp, decent recent phone, nice design and very fast, has sd card

also Samsung s3, killer feature- it's fast and powerful phone, disadvantages - rather old phone

also try the nexus 4, highly recommended, disadvantages - no removeable battery and sd card, so if you listen of music or even watch video downloads, space will be limited,

I've updated the other threads accordingly...

I spent around $2300 in the end including two cases and 32gb SD card which I'm now unsure as to what I'm supposed to do with it. Bought from a PRC site... Phone is v good... Not sure about the camera tho.. M
