How to open a bank account for a sports club?

I'm part of an up and coming sports club and one of the first orders of business is to set up an NGO bank account under the name of the sports club so that any cheques issued can be deposited in this account. My question is which bank would be best? Hang Seng, BOC, etc and how do I do this? Do I just tell them I need to open an account for a club? What needs to be signed, does there have to be a deposit initially?

Prepare for forms. Lots and lots of forms ...... I don't know what incorporating a sports club means here, but you'd better make sure you did it and have all the certificates.

Does your club exist as a legal entity (either a corporation or a society)? If not then I don't think you can do it.

Prepare for a nightmare. As PDLM says if you are not legally registered with a list of Directors etc then expect it to take months. At least that is my experience.

we had registered our amatuer theatre group as a non-profit organisation a couple of years back.
submitted the relevant documents, got the registration certificate and opened an account with BOC with our HKID copies and residence proof if I remember correctly. the process was quite smooth actually.

Documents can be procured if need be as the club exists, all registrations have been done. Everything has been taken care of in this respect. A bank account just needs to be set up now. @pinkelephant: do you remember what was involved, how long it took?

If you're wanting to open a business account at HSBC then you'll need the certfied copy of the information on the Business Register (this is an official document telling HSBC who the officers of the business are). You can apply for this online here: GovHK: Application for Supply of Information on the Business Register

I guess HSBC is the most strict about requirements so other banks may not need this, although it seems to me that they would need some proof of who the officers of the club are.
