I've gone with the BB. Hair lovely and soft; no frizz, no problem with colour. The Japanese one was too straight for me; I looked ridiculous. Couldn't wait for it to grow out.

But BB doesn't grow out, that's the point.
I think it depends on hair thickness and volume, but some people do look a bit silly with the Japanese straightening while others its great. I've tried both and found that the BB was not particularly effective for me; still had a lot of frizz, did not tame my hair, did not noticeably straighten my hair and any effect it did have disappeared after about 2 weeks. The Japanese straightening was great because my hair is very course, and I've got a lot of it. It made my hair smooth and manageable, and it actually felt much silkier after getting it straightened than before. And like SS, I'm too lazy to dry and iron my hair every day.
I've been thinking about getting a straightening treatment but I've no idea about the differences between them. My hair is very fine and I don't have an awful lot of it! I'd like it to be straight so that it doesn't go frizzy in the humidity. It's not very frizzy really but if I dry and straighten it then go out it looks like I haven't straightened it. Any thoughts about whether a Brazilian blowout or a Japanese would be better??? I've asked a few hairdressers but never really get a straight answer!
nlh, Japanese straightening permanently changes the structure of your hair. It chemically breaks the bonds and then your hair is straightened then another chemical rebuilds the bond in a straight configuration. Your hair will not revert back its old ways but obviously the new growth will be your regular hair texture It is a chemical process so will cause some damage but my thought is that I probably do worse over time drying and ironing every day.
BBO is a keratin formula that coats your hair to make it smooth an less frizzy. Because it is a coating, it will breakdown and your hair will go back to its old ways if you do not redo it. I think it's typically suppose to last ~3-4 months, but not sure about that.
I recommend going into a salon that offers both for a consultation. A good stylist will explain the process of both and should be able to recommend one over the other depending on your hair and your expected outcomes.
I did a Keratin Blowout treatment (not called Brazilian blowout so not sure if it's the same thing) in Manila a few months back. I liked the results in some ways, but I missed the little curls I used to get around the bottom of my hair and it made my hair look less voluminous - but actually I decided I liked the look of volume so didnt bother to redo it. It washed out pretty quickly too - perhaps a month? heck of an expensive for an experiment though - I decided after that it was easier to love the hair you have than spend a fortune trying to change it!
