    Blinds closed on Cathay

So we came home from Sydney all the way with the blinds closed! Flight left at 7.30 am! asked the attendant and the reply was: "it is an early morning flight..people get up early and need a rest. It is not compulsory though..you can open them if you want to."

Rancid Koala does not buy that explanation. Rather, closing blinds may well have something to do with: (1) less hassles from awake passengers and/or (2) less alcohol given to passengers to save $. But I could be wrong...Anyone had a similar experience?

I dont understand your problem / thread!

You could have opened your blinds?!?!
It's common procedure on long-haul flights leaving early in the morning to close it, as many travellers usually (try to) sleep.

It is unhealthy to close blinds when flying from Australia to HK when the time difference is small because it encourages jet lag. It is bright sunshine outside! Most of us are awake during the day and sleep at night.

It makes sense to do it when you are travelling to the U.S. when it is dark outside, but not to Aus. The point is the blinds should be up during the daylight hours. Maybe if they had kept them closed to about 10 am it would have been OK but they kept them closed until after 4 pm!

We did open the blinds - but a stewardess come around and closed it!

Well it does seem a bit odd but frankly, I think it's not that big a deal. If you want to stay awake, you do, it's easier to watch tv for example when the blinds are drawn and many people prefer to sleep during a long flight regardless of the time.

It's a bit of a stretch to call it unhealthy because it inconvenienced you and if you're on the window seat, you have control of the blind...

If people want to sleep, you think the attendants should make an effort to keep people awake? I guess they should start leading little exercise sessions because sitting for extended period is a lot worse than having the blinds open or closed...

A mixture of both of those I believe. I always take them up on their offer and open the blinds on day flights. If anyone complains I offer them my eyeshades (and try to drink their share of the booze )

Maybe they didn't want a revolt as the plane approached the brown cloud of China?
Or maybe it saves fuel? That seems to be the reason for all airline behavoir now.

I am not sure if I really agree whether attendents care about ur sleep. I have had terrible experience, when I am fast asleep and the hostess woke me up to ask if I'd like to eat my meal.

Let them know you dont want to be disturbed and they will put a "Do not disturb" sticker on your seat. By deafult it makes sense for them to wake you up otherwise people will complain they missed food just because they had a little nap.
