Hong Kong Science Park - Convenient enough for employees?

    Hello,

I'm considering locating my startup company in the HK Science park (Shatin area). Would locals be happy enough to travel there daily for work? The shuttle bus system I think is pretty decent (lots of companies there now), but I'm wondering if there's still a level of inconvenience that might detract from it being a convenient commute - for example as opposed to a location on the MTR line.

    Thanks

i work in science park. i really love working here. in fact, i've made science park the only place i'm willing to work for. we've got a pay-per-use gym, waterfront park, biking trail, trees, fountains, clean air, very nice and brand new buildings. i love this place so much i go to their seminars and presentations to give them suggestions to improve on the place and to get exact dates on when the residential properties are ready for sale.

but, i'm also one of the few who actually love this place this much. it's also because i live very nearby. most people don't like this place because of the location. but the shuttle buses here are getting better and are reaching to quite a number of places all over hong kong. i don't think you should worry about that.

i think science park is a wonderful choice.

Thanks for the reply - good to know that some like it and some don't.

How long is the commute for example from central? What MTR/KCR/bus do you take?

I'm seriously considering it - your comment on the clean air is a good one - that would be great to be working in good air conditions instead of breathing in the mess found in Kwun Tong or most similar places

ok, from central, it would take around one hour, most likely less. the problem with the commute isn't so much of the time, but the transfers. mtr, kcr, and the 272K bus (which takes 15 minutes when a cab ride would've taken 5 minutes) or the minibus. most people have to make more than two transfers.

pretty much anywhere else other than the new territories would take an hour or so.

though there are shuttle buses that goes to hong kong island (north point, central, causeway bay, wanchai), or kowloon east, kowloon west, yuen long, and etc. but there is only one for each location for the morning and for the evening. so if you miss that, you'll have to make more than three transfers on public transportation.

and the air and quality of life here is definitely much better than kwun tong. one thing i would complain is just the overpriced and bad quality food.

We have an office at HKSP and it was the best decision we made as a young company so far. There is nothing like it in the US and the support/service is excellent by their staff...they really care when supporting their companies (we are in their incubation program). There is a shuttle from University station that takes around 3 minutes or so and is 3 dollars HK. Very easy commute. In re to the comment about the food....the selection is GREAT and its very good. I am speaking as a foreigner but...really...its like a shopping mall food court. You have the ocean, air, growing bike trails (and even a bike shop where you can buy or rent those 3 wheelers).

We moved there feeling that eventually it would grow into a nice fully functional community and the heart of high tech R&D in HK. We still think thats the case. When they put more apartments up and the planned boat dock....it will really take off. We plan on staying for a while. Glad we arrived early....
