Red face Move to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Hi, anyone has experience about Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada?
How's life there? recommended primary school for kids? living expenses? job prospects? Do's and Don'ts?
Any useful comments would be highly appreciated.
    Cheers

I lived in the Maritimes for a little while but never in Hali. I've been there for drunken weekends, if that counts?

Halifax is/was the new 'it' city in Canada (according to Halifax) while it won't get as big like the other large cities of Canada, it does have a lot of room for growth.

I don't know what industry you work in so I can't comment on jobs, but Fish, Farms, Shipping are pretty big there. When RIM (Blackberry) was relevant they ran some of their support and stuff from Halifax / Bedford. There are several tech companies there too, some game developers run their shops from there.

Weather is as you expect. Lots of snow in the winter, summers are very nice, you get hurricanes coming up the Atlantic from time to time.

Lots to do there, if you want to hike you can go up to cape breton, or visit Kejimkujik, or into the valley to visit farms, and some good beaches around. Plenty of options for day trips. There's a casino there as well.

Gotta drive everywhere though, they have buses and cabs but the buses are terrible in my experience, and cabs are expensive.

Housing can vary, obviously if you live in the city proper it's more expensive. Bedford is in the HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality) is one of the nicer but more expensive suburb. Bayer's Lake is newly developed, huge strip mall, lots of apartment buildings. Hatchet Lake is less developed but is close enough to Hali.

General rule is to stay away from Dartmouth and Cole Harbour if you can help it, they're the less safe areas of the city.

    Can't comment on primary schools.

I'm sure there are more things I know but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Agree that Bedford is quite nice. Also Keiths is the local brew and is pretty good.

Lightbulb anyone moving to Nova Scotia?

Many people seem to be heading to Vancouver and I am wondering if anyone is moving to Nova Scotia in the next few months. I know the place fairly well and would be nice to share information. Wonder if by any chance if Andy from this post did in fact move there.
