I will be moving to HK this summer from the US (really looking forward to it). One conern I have is that I have studied mandarin for 2 years now but do not want to lose my ability after I move to Hong Kong. At my current UNI there are loads of mandarin speakers, but I'm not sure if that is so common in HK as well, or at least will I be able to find them and will they be as willing to make friends as those in the mainland.
I lived in Beijing for a year studying abroad and people there would jump through hoops to make friends with me. Is it similar in HK?
How many of you have local cantonese speaking friends? I want to learn cantonese so I'm wondering if the environment is as conducive to learning cantonese as say beijing is to learning mandarin.
In short: Will I have problems making friends with native mandarin and cantonese speakers?
Thanks a lot, this is my first thread here, I just registered!
