    Thumbs up Minibus help

OK, I've been here a week and have stuck to taxi's to get me around for my work. I attempted to go 'local' today and get a minibus - to my peril. I tried to get a green one from Kennedy Town to Wah Fu but they wouldn't stop when I stuck out my hand.

What's the low-down with minibuses. I realised that some have a designated route (is that red or green). Also, how do I pay if I every get on one? Do I need to state my desination?

....also, is there anywhere I can find out routes for normal double deckers? I need routes for KT to Wah Fu, Wah Fu to Sheung Wan, KT to Old Peak Road and Old Peak Road to Sheung Wan.

Sorry for lots of questions.....bit lost.....TAXI!

    Click on transportation map.

By the way, I think #58 might get you to Wah Fu. I know it goes past Baguio / Cyberport.

Yes, #58 goes from Kennedy Town to Wah Fu. I think Kennedy Town is actually the beginning (or the end) of the route. #58 is a green minibus and I think green minibuses make pre-determined stops (not 100% certain if they make additional stops). You can pay with Octopus or cash. There are now "bells" on them that you can ring but that means you have to know where the stops are.

green minibuses follow the predetermined route - however, if it didn't stop it may be because it was full. They only have 16 seats and there is no room for standing. Usually, if there is space and you indicate to them you want to board, they will stop anywhere to let you on board (not so sure about on double yellow lines though).

Most now take Octopus and the fee is fixed for the stop you get on at regardless of whether you want to go the full distance. What you will find is that as the bus gets nearer to its destination, the fee drops. This is the same on all buses.

You don't need to state your destination, but you must tell the driver if you want to get off along the route. If there is no bell - the Cantonese is "YAU LOK". Just say it when you are near to your getting off point and he/she will pull in at the next convenient place. If you know the name of your stop in cantonese, even better, but it is usual to let the driver know only just before you get off, not as you get on.

The Green Mini-bus # 58, 58A and 59 all commence on Sands St in Kennedy Town. They go along Victoria Rd and there is a stop just above Wah Fu. They do not go through Wah Fu.

Remember that on green minibuses you pay when you get on, but on red minibuses you pay when you get off. Take a note of the price on a sign in the windshield of a red bus as you're getting on, as the driver may change it before it's time to get off. You pay the price that was up when you got on. A red minibus will pick you up and drop you off whenever you like.

Did you find that book with bus routes in English? Every one we looked at (in that whole series of books) had the bus routes in Chinese only. Started to figure that English speakers must not ride the bus.... It would be an informative series if they were English or totally bi-lingual.
