    Effects of humidity at home

I've read posts regarding the effects of humidity on hair and clothes, but what about on art? In particular, will humidity at home affect framed photos (8x10's), diplomas, weavings, etc. We're hoping that the AC will be enough to stave off the humidity.

On a related note, many of our items are being shipped by sea. Will the humidity in the containers be damaging to personal effects?

Here at my office, if the AC is not on then it's the dehumidifier.

You can get a dehumidifier, which is basically a fridge without storage space and doors but with water container to collect the water drawn out from the air. During wet months, that can be 10 Liter per day or more for the appartment. But dehumidifiers normally stop working below 15 degrees. Then the part where the water condenses just freezes up and the water doesn't run down to collect in the container.

In summer, when you use the aircon, you can skip the humidifier, as the aircon dehumidifies the air already.

Smudging of paint is not the only problem you can get.

More serious is mold. You can get mold on any surface where there is some organic material. Leather, clothing, bedding, anything standing too close to an outside wall, books, paintings, furniture, walls etc. etc.
The only place where I didn't see any mold so far is the window glass and the window frame.

Ok, so that answers one issue: air con can replace the use of a dehumidifier. So now, some say you still need a dehumidifier for the cool months. But there isn't significant humidity in the cooler months anyway, is there?

Only from January to April. Around that time the tiles of your home will be wet without rain.
