i have been in hk a year now and want to get a driver licence for car. i have a full australian driver licence and i wonder if anyone could tell me what requirements there are to apply for an international licence or should i just get a hk driver licence. what would an international licence give me if i could apply for it?

Strictly, if you are resident in Hong Kong for more than a year, the only legal way is to get a Hong Kong driving licence. With a full Australian licence this is simply a matter of filling a form with some supporting documents and paying a fee.
The form, which is pretty self-explanatory, is here: http://www.td.gov.hk/FileManager/EN/...ev_7.2006_.pdf

With an Australian licence you could only get an International Driving Permit issued in Australia, and strictly that wouldn't be sufficient to drive here - driving permits are, by international convention, supposed to be linked to your place of residence.
