i generally do not use the DC button, but in my apartment you'd have to use that...
there are a whole row of 6 lifts, and people are taking lifts from two sides.. so essentially people at lift 6 will not walk to lift 1 to take an opening lift, they more likely wait for lift 4 and 5... vice versa.
but pressing the button at any of the lift causes the closing door even far away to reopen. unless someone inside the lift is pressing the DC button continuously to overwrite.
a person at lift 6, press the button, causes lift 1 to reopen, but he will not walk to lift 1 to take the lift!
similar system in my office tower as well...
so its the character of the nation translating into the system setup and definition.
