While I understand India's bitterness towards Britain, from your posts GnR, you have a major chip on your shoulder.

Whatever the reasons for Russia's involvement, the sacrifice of the Russian people was arguably the major reason for Hitler's downfall not the Americans.
"It is generally believed they were more advanced". Don't think so. Evidence? Yes towards the end of the war they made discoveries in missiles but that was late on. Generally I would argue they were no more advanced - what advancements would they have brought to the UK through occupation? Britain brought railways, other infrastructure, legal and bureaucratic systems.
I am not defending the British occupation of India in any way but really you need to get your facts straight.
I wonder if it's the same chip on the shoulder that a percentage of Indians ( from India, non British raised ) who seem to be not impressed with the movie, Slum Dog Millionaire ?
It seems that, if you ask an Indian from India, Slum Dog Millionaire makes them out to be almost sub human, especially the early scenes of abject poverty, associated with Indian slums....
I thought the movie was brilliant by the way, having seen it a couple of nights ago, and it seems that most of the world agrees, or it wouldn't have won so many Oscar's, or is it sour grapes that it wasn't an Indian film maker, that got all the glory ? Who knows.

Not really, the only reason the movie didn't work for me was I have seen hundreds of such movies that have been made in the hindi film industry through out 70s and 80s. Also, the dark underbelly of Mumbai have also been shown many a times in 90s and in this century. So, besides the movie being in english it had no novelty for me. As far as the realisit cinema goes, there have been umpteen movies made in Hindi and other regional languages, its just that they don't get the right platform, so as to be visible for foreigners to watch them.
There are a lot of us who do think it is a brilliant movie.

By the way, closing this thread .. no clue how it went from someone whinging about an elevator to where it is in the last few posts...
