HKPIC Process

Hi all,
I'm currently in the process of applying for ROA and I'm up to the stage where I have to go back to HK to show the immigration officer the original copies of the documents I copied.

Could anyone give me an idea of what's next? So that I can plan ahead any future trips that could be needed.

Yep, that's pretty much exactly what I had to go through to get my HKID. It's pretty straight forward as long you have all the documents they ask for.

After you send in all the photocopies, they will send you a letter letting you know whether you have been approved or not. If you're approved, they will ask you to come in person for an interview to have all the original copies verified. Once that's done, the immigration officer will put an endorsement on your passport saying that you have unconditional stay and you'll get your picture taken and get your temporary HKID on the same day.

I applied in January. They got back to me after 3 weeks. I did not need to provide any original of the copies I sent in. My husband applied one months before I did. the only original document he had to bring was the purchase documentation for our home. The whole process was very straight forward and simple.

I'm applying from overseas, so I don't know if it would apply to you, but a month passed before I received the interview letter.

I went to the Immigration Department with the originals they asked for, and they approved me right on the place. An endorsement was put in my passport which said that all my previous conditions of stay were canceled.

You can then proceed to the floor where you apply for ID cards and hope that the daily walk-in quota is not full yet. If it is, you can try your luck again next day or make an appointment online, which will take you a few days.

Once you went through the ID card procedure (application form, finger print, etc) it takes about 10 days to get the ID card. You should be able to get it done in one single stay in HK. To pickup the ID card you can send a friend with a proxy letter, so you don't have to wait around for 10 days.

Some questions:

1. How did they notified you? By postal mail?

2. Did you send a self-address stamped envelop? Or IMMD just sent the reply through postal mail at their expense.

3. Did you use form ROP145?The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region - Immigration Department

4. Did you send it to:

Right of Abode Section, 25th Floor, Immigration Tower, 7 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
or the Chinese Consulate in your country?

5. Did you try getting HKPIC from the country you're residing now? The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region - Immigration Department

I picked up the form from the Immigration office which comea with 2 sticky address labels, you put ur address on both and then they use one to send notification of receiving your application and the presumably to notify you on attending the interview stage. (still waiting on that)

I went and applied on the 25th Floor of the building in Wan Chai - basically picked the form up there, went downstairs to the photocopy place and then posted it back up on the 25th floor. Took about 20 mins, most of the time was trying to figure out how to get to the 25th floor (separate lifts for floors past 11 or 13)

That my experience but not sure how it works applying from overseas

1. Yes, they notified me via mail.

2. As killahbad said, you get a couple of mailing labels, to which you write your details in and they use these to send any correspondence back to you. You don't have to pay for the mailing costs from their side.

3. Yes.

4,5. I handed in the application to the ROA section office in Wanchai, so answer to that would be no, but any correspondence was done with my overseas address.

To answer your questions,

1. Yes, via mail.

2. As killahbad said, they include a couple of mailing labels with the application. You write your details on them and immigration use them to send any replies to you. You do not have to pay for any postage costs from their side.

3. Yes.

4,5,. I actually handed my application into the ROA section in Wanchai so I didn't really do an "overseas application", just that any replies were sent to my overseas address. Sorry about the confusion.
