I'd also like to know the same thing. I'm a Hong Kong-born Canadian citizen. Based on what I've read, I have ROA in HK although I left as a 4 year old and have no HK documentation other than a birth certificate. I'm currently in Hong Kong for 4 months on academic exchange and am planning on getting my HK Permanent Resident ID card while I'm here, and am hoping that I can also get a HKSAR passport and Home Return Permit but don't want to give up my Canadian citizenship to do so. When I apply for the HKSAR passport and HRP, will my Canadian citizenship bar me from obtaining either document?

No, because (assuming your parents were Chinese/HK citizens) you are a HK-born Chinese citizen and have been since birth. You don't need to naturalise because you have always been a Chinese citizen.

So I'd be able to get the HKSAR passport and HRP without renouncing my Canadian citizenship? Yes, both my parents are HK-born, though they also acquired Canadian citizenship when we immigrated to Canada in 1988.

Yes, I believe so, unless you explicitly renounced your Chinese Citizenship at some point.

I would be grateful if someone could shed some light on this.
Please excuse my vagueness. What happened was that the CTS personnel simply requested me to show her my foreign passport. She just made a cursory glance and handed it back to me. I had no idea why she'd want to do that. Therefore, what's truly important in my mind is your HKID and your HKSAR passport.

I am surprised that the correct response to such a request is not "Foreign passport? But I gave that up when I applied for Chinese citizenship!".

Situation is, if you apply for Chinese nationality (through naturalization) then I assume they ask you to renounce your original nationality.
But many people here on this forum have acquired Chinese Nationality by birthright and Immigration does not recognize any other nationality. That should answer your question.

So here are my 3 questions

    1. Has anyone applied for 30 years Home Return Permit instead of 10 years validity ?
Is it the same fuss as with China visas, i.e. first apply for a 1 year visa then you are eligible for a 3 year visa ?

    2. I have read here it takes 2 weeks, how fast is expedited service ?

    3. What do you fill in under parent's address ( if abroad ) just the country and city or the full address ?

    Thanks !

Ok, i got my HKPID in 2001. After i got that i went to China Travel Svs to get my HRP valid for 10 yrs. That card expired in Aug. 2011. Since Ididn't make a trip since 3 yrs ago, I didnt get a chance to renew it. I contacted the Chinese Consulate in the USA to see if i coudl renew here. And they told me to try to find info from family in HK,which I had none of. You'd think they would have contacts for their own organizations! So, I wrote to HK immigration abt renewal and then they fwd'ed me the local HK China Travel Svs email. I emailed them and got a reply back in a week or so but it was in Chinese even though i wrote to them in English. I used a translator to translate. It was atrocious, but i was able to get the gist of it. They didnt' answer my questions specifically nor did they give me the application electronically so I will renew it when i get to hk later this month.

After reading these posts, I'm doubting whether i can get a renewal. All i've got is my HKPID (smart card). do i need to apply for HKSAR too ? I was banking of just going to hk and paying for the expedited svs at China Travel and still having to wait FIVE business days (not very good work ethics for expediting...even here expedite svs is 3 days)......3 yrs ago I turned my regular HKPID card for the smart card....and i got a $180 china visa just in case since i wasn't sure if the HKPID was good enough, nobody in the chinese consulate in the States could answer that...can you believe the non-existent communication? So i wasted $180 for nothing, b/c the HKPID was still good. Now i'm afraid to come to find that they won't process my renwal and i'd be "stuck" in HK wasting all my time since the time conincides w/ all the holiday schedules and in the end i'd have to go to the Chinese Consulate to get a china visa.....

You have a valid HKPID and an expired HRP. That's perfect. You are good to get a new HRP when you are in HK.

You may try applying for PRC Travel Document. Go to your Chinese consulate and show them your HKPID, HRP and US passport. Tell them you need to go to mainland China direct from the US, not via HK. They will demand to see your HKSAR passport but you may have a chance without it -- depending on the consul.

As a Chinese national, you must present yourself as a Chinese national in China. That stupid consul should not have issued a Chinese visa to a Chinese national.

    who gives a frog ?
it's good they do that as a visa is faster than HKSAR passaporte ( 10 days ) + HRTP ( 14 days )
