Hi,
I need help. I will be coming to HK from Canada within a month and my brain is almost dead. I have been searching for places to live every day since early September yet haven't come up with a good one. Today, just reading this forum, I realised I need to join and ask real people instead of wrestling with things all by myself. Here is my not-so-easy task. I have a dog, so my options are limited. I will work in Kowloon Tong and my son will have to go to Taikoo because that's the only school in HK that would accept a transfer student (seriously!). I've heard that Hong Lok yuen, Tai Po are dog friendly, but a bit far for my son or aren't they? I have been also thinking about discovery bay, park island (ma wan), goldcoast, sai kung, and all that. Nothing really fits our profile and I can't think any more. I will probably live in HK for more than 5 years (or forever), so want to find a place I can call home. Where would be ideal for us? Thanks!

What sort of rental budget are you looking at?

OMG! having read the subject line, i thought it said... dog and teen ATTACKED!! i'm so glad that's not the case!

I live in DB and can tell you it is fantastic for dogs and young children. there's not much here for teens though there are a lot of them living here! The main problem for you would be...commuting. you would BOTH have quite a good commute, as in at least 1 hour-1.25 hours. each way. if that is acceptable for both of you, then by all means come check us out! soem love db and some hate it. it is a matter of personal choice.

you could also try sai kung or clearwater bay.

my budget is about max. $30k. Pokfulam was my first choice in the early stage of search (and I thought THAT was far).

Yeah, that's the problem. All these nice places we have in mind (actually I, as my son is reluctant to come to HK) are quite far. We like water, trails, garden, as long as there is access to city life. There are not much housing available in Sai Kung and clearwater bay with our budget.

Why not live in Kowloon Tong? Nice area and easily accessible as far as Taikoo is concerned.

I assume the son's situation is temporary .. and he'll be moving to a school closer to home once you've settled in?

With that budget you'll get a lot of choices, with the limitation only on the dog and ideal location. One more critical issue is you have to complete all the relocation formalty as required by the local regulation. There are some specialist pet movers that can offer their services to you. Tin Hau or Braemar Hill will be your ideal choices in terms of location , budget and convenience.

you should have NO PROBLEM whatsoever finding something in SaiKung for that budget!

my aunt and uncle live there. they have 2100' and pay $15000/month!

As for school, I don't want to move him once he goes to school. He's been transferring coast to coast and cross continental just because of my jobs. And I have no complain about that school. I was just a bit disappointed by the fact that international schools in HK do not care about transferring students.

Thanks for the info. I will narrow my search areas.
As for my dog, I have taken care of permission and health certificate and shots, but besides that, whatelse do I need for pet mover service? If you know something, please tell me more.

I'm sure if you look at the premium educational institutions in your home town, you'll quickly figure out there is a shortage of available slots.

Don't let that stop you though ... transfering in the middle of the term is hard, but plenty of transfers happen once that term is open and you might just find an opening near where you live.
