Hi ...we may be moving from Sydney to HK for our job and we would like to understand how much can we transport in a 20 ft container.

    We have the following items:

    1. 1 no. garden swing

    2. 1 no. 40" plasma TV

    3. About 130 cartons of dimensions (431mm x 406mm x 596mm, 104 Litres)

Cartons will be containing clothes, crockery, appliances etc.

    4. 1 nos. Barbeque

    5. 2 nos. sideboards - dimensions 180mm x 1500mm x 1200mm

    6. 1 nos. cupboard dimensions 1500mm x 1200mm x 600mm

    7. 2 nos. Desktop computers

    8. 1 nos. home theater system

    9. 4 nos. chairs

    10. 2 nos. DVD racks

    11. 2 nos. medium sized side tables

    12. 2 nos. shoe racks dimensions 180mm x 1200mm x 1200mm

    WRONG !!!!!
    Effective cube 20Ft = 28.35m3
I have done this day in day out for years. Theoretical against practical is divergent by a wide margin.

You should be OK with what you list.

Just as a matter of interest, what explains the difference between theoretical and practical volume?
Sorry, this is OT but I figured I might as well take advantage of being able to ask the expert.

In our personal experience, a 20 footer is fine as long as you live in a 2-3 bedroom without a lot of clutter. Containers take A LOT of boxes. It's the big furniture items you collect with a house (and kids) that push you over the edge into 40 footer space.

We moved from a 2500 sq.ft. house (+ big basement). 2 adults + 2 young kids. Our 40 footer still had about 2 empty meters left at the end. Granted, we have very little stuff according to most people.

we moved all the clutter from a 4 bed house (no kids)

so a huge number of boxes (about 200 I think) but only a small amount of the furniture - 2 sofas, 1 sideboard, a couple of tables and a large desk and a couple of bikes. That fitted in a 20 ft container with a few inches to spare.
