Reality of Moving to HK for a New Yorker

    To each his/her own... all I am saying is that with a 500K salary, anyone can live comfortably, travel a bit, go out and save money if you do it right.

    It's roughly the equivalent of a six figure salary in Canada, OZ or NZ when you factor in the taxes. It's not luxury but I would hardly call it hardship.

    Here's a fairly generous budgetary projection for two people:

    Rental: 15K/month
    Tax:3K/month
    Groceries:5K/month
    Utilities/Internet/TV:2K/month
    Transportation:2K/month
    Entertainment:5K/month

    Total 32K/month or 384 000

    That leaves savings of 116 000

    Take a flat for 10K and that gives you three holidays of 20K with the same savings.
