    Talking Garbage

In 2008, Hong Kong's per capita disposal rate of municipal solid waste was 1.35 kilogrammes per day.

Some say HK needs an incinerator others better waste streaming or charging for waste disposal

Hong Kong is running out of landfill space and something needs to be done but what?

If you want to make a difference, ban the use of unnecessary or over complicated packaging which is often the case with local consumer products. Also ban or TAX very heavily, things like MDF laminated prepack crap furniture like Ikea etc that majority of it ends eventually as landfill.

If people had to pay more for the products they purchased, people would hold onto things for longer, like we did during the 80's when a TV, a piece of furniture, computer or hi fi component cost a small fortune.
HK in my opinion is Asia's epitome of throw away society, in contrast to the Japanese, are chalk and cheese in how they treat their surroundings/homes etc Japan has pretty damn good socially ingrained stewardship.

I doubt anything will change, HK has tipped over the point of no return and in my opinion has to many people, it isn't sustainable and lets be honest most people here, really don't give a shit.

The only way you will reduce waste in HK is if you hit the wallets/purses of consumers, thus reducing consumption, which goes against the average CFO grunt that wants its products to exponentially grow in market share while increasing profit.

Blame the big corporates that encouraged yearly expected growth targets and ourselves for buying/supporting those brands that smothered the world in plastic crap that we really don't need...

    Further adding.....

The British govt shut down all of Hong Kongs previous refuse incinerators in the early 1990's due to environmental health concerns, interesting that the Chinese run govt is willing to go down this route.. Reduce immigration, and crack down on the manufacture of disposable crap products and mandate very authoritarian recycling rules on how refuse is divided up like they willingly do in Japan, most of Europe and even in Australia., then things might improve here. But as the population fast approaches 10 million, I doubt that things are going to get better, it'll only get worse..

You have to take care of the NIMBY crowd that exist in Hong Kong and elsewhere. In principle many may agree with having an incinerator to get rid of the rubbish, but the minute they realize where it will be located, the "not-in-my-backyard" mentality will rear it's ugly head.

It's the same with columbariums, every Hker is complaining about the lack of burial spaces, they would'nt mind having more columbarium...just so long as it's not located near them...
