What can former employers in HK legally say about you?

Have heard that most company policies will only allow confirmation of employment dates, position titles, and reason of discharge - in order to avoid potential lawsuit / defamation liability.

Anyone who has had experience or specialize in the field know how "true" this is for HK?

Depends on who in the previous employers office gets contacted, if the new employers only manage to reach the HR dept then most will probably just give dates, titles and reason for leaving unless the employee was terminated then they will probably say why as well.

Now if the new employers do manage to get to the manager or who ever higher up then they might have a lot to say of the employee, either good or bad.
