Kids on Bikes

    Kids on Bikes

Moving to happy valley next month - will be living at the top end of Blue Pool road (or is it the bottom end?! - near where it meets Tai Hang Road)

My kids are 8 and 10 and enjoy riding their bikes. Will there be places to ride in the area? I think the running paths all disallow bikes don't they? Wondering if it is worth bringing them at all (the bikes that is ). Are roller blades permitted on the running paths (like the Bowen road trail)?

Bowen Road is your best bet for closeness and length.
Kids are also allowed to ride at the Morrison Hill Skate park:

A better option is to take a taxi/car ride out to TaiWai which is the start of the Tolo Harbour set of paths : http://www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/...-to-tai-po.jsp

If your kids are *really* good at it, then consider taking them up into China with HKCTA : http://www.hkcta.org.hk/

Roller blades and bikes are allowed on running paths like Bowen road but are not allowed inside the Happy Valley track.

If your family enjoys skating/blading, join this group which has a fair number of participating families: http://www.meetup.com/hkonwheels/

Thanks Howard. Bowen road looked like a winner but looking it at in street view there is a big no cycling sign right at the start. Sounds like kids would be okay to ignore that then (I've seen plenty on scooters and whatnot, but never bikes)

We actually made it out the the science park and Tai Po on our look-see last week, so thats an option for a "day-trip", but mostly they are likely to just want to ride around the streets for a bit with their friends. If they can ride on the Bowen road trail I think that will do the job.

I use that path very regularly and TBH I never noticed that sign, you're right it does say no bikes. However, while I've never seen an adult with a proper big bike there, it is normally full of kids walking, biking, scooting, skating, running etc. On weekends, I avoid the path because there are so many slowish kids on bikes. When my bunch were little, thats where they rode their bikes.

There is 2 more options near the top end of HV: Green Lane and Briar Avenue. Both of these roads have cars on them but they are slow and very few.

You can also try to sneak into the Green Lane park (at the end of Green Lane) but there is usually a fun-police in there that will shoo you away.
