RECOMMENDATIONS to fix/get new AIR CONDITIONER NEEDED

Okay, so it's 'the split air-conditioner is not working properly' problem again.

Tried to have it fixed 3 times by 2 companies, although admittedly, they were general renovation companies rather than specialised A/C contractors (before you say it, yeah I know, my stupidity!).

They managed to stop it dripping, but the air that comes out still isn't cool.

    So, any recommendations for:

    1) a good, seemingly trustworthy, recently tried and tested A/C company who can check and fix the problem (without creating other problems) and honestly give an answer as to whether it can/should be fixed rather than completely replaced as well as charge 'reasonable' prices? (or am I being too naive to expect this?)

    2) good, seemingly trustworthy, recently tried and tested A/C companies who can remove old A/C and install a new one (without doing a Mickey Mouse job on installation) and charge 'reasonable' prices? This is in case I do have to get a new one.

The A/C is about 10 years old now, so maybe I'll just get a new one anyway.

Recommendations for A/C brand and A/C company (name & contact number) will be most appreciated (not by A/C companies pretending to be satisfied customers!). If can tell me your own experience of cost of new A/C including installation, that would be even more appreciated.

Plus how long is the warranty period usually for new A/Cs? Does it usually cover all malfunctions?

I've read posts from a few years back about poor A/C companies with poor service
(made the problem worse, create new problems, turn up late, don't turn up at all etc...) which of course, I'd like to avoid.

I'm looking for updated genuine recommendations from satisfied customers.

This would be for an approx 250-300 sq ft room.

    Thanks

Replacing split air types can be a hassle since they might need to put up bamboo scaffolding which adds to the cost. Its not really helpful to recommend a company, as some of the companies are localised and may not cross harbour for example. Maybe you can let people know which area your flat is? Its probably easier to just walk to an appliance store, and get the staff to arrange the installation of a new unit for you.

Oh, didn't think of that! Thanks for this advice.

If the split A/C unit is to be replaced by a new one, then does all the piping and wiring usually need to be replaced too, or can it be just the unit?

Many manufacturers have a service department and will come out to check it. I know Hitachi come out, take it away, fix it and return, albeit for window-type.

We used to have Carrier units, and called their service number to get them checked. Last time they were out they recommended replacing them as parts were difficult to get now and would be more cost effective to replace the next time they started acting up.

When replacing check your building management company for scaffold, we had to give them notice before doing any scaffold. Also if you're high up DO NOT watch them putting up the scaffold, the guys that did ours didn't have any safety lines on at 40 floors up, scared the bejesus out of me.

As far as I could tell they replaced the pipes but the outside unit was directly on the other side of the wall for us, so that might have been a factor.

The installers did note that the renovation company we used when we moved in had bent the pipe to make it fit in our bedroom, and they were surprised we didn't have issues with the aircon earlier.

    Edit:Fixed typo's

We have Daikins all around and have had no issues with them for the past 3 years. A bit more expensive than the other brands save for Mitsubishi but it was the brand recommended by my renovation contractor who installed the units. I think 10 yr old units should be replaced as newer units are much more energy efficient.

    Hi Oldtimer,

Are they professional specialist A/C contractors then?
They don't seem to have a website.
    Are they based in Stanley?
