MRI Scans - Where/How to get in HK?

    Hi guys,

I hurt my ankle a few years back in Canada, and although X-rays showed there were no bone fractures when I had it examined, my ankle still feels sore and kinda uncomfortable. I want to take a MRI scan to see where the pain is still coming from (probably from torn ligaments) so I can find the right doctor to help me heal the problem.

My question is; does anyone have any idea how/where I can get a MRI scan? Im' not sure if there are any facilities that allow walk-ins? or is a doctor note necessary?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I think you can, but no insurance company will cover the cost of an MRI without a doctor's referral.

I got mine done at Axon scanning centre 16 Ice House Street, Central. Maybe give them a call - 31682838.

There are other scanning centres around HK, I think there is one in the Bank of America building as well.

    Cost will be around HK$3 - 5k.

Thanks for the reply! I will probably speak to my doctor first, and tell him about the problems with my ankle, and how I want to get it furthur examined through MRI (since I did a X-Ray before, and nothing wrong came up).

Usually you will need a doctor's referral letter to get imaging done. Any doctor can refer you to get it done, there's tons of imaging centres around HK, just depends where you're located.
For an ankle MRI, $5000 should be about the maximum you should pay. The imaging centre I use is about $3500-$4000, can't remember the exact cost as I haven't checked in a while

Go and see an orthopedic specialist (you don't need a referral from your GP) and if they think it's warranted, they'll refer you for a MRI.

I've used Dr Dan Hooley (in Jardine House) in the past and he referred me to Axon Scanning (as mentioned by pin earlier). It cost approx HK$ 5,000 for a MRI on my foot. Dr Hooley is a good guy and won't recommend you for any unnecessary treatment (some doctors here seem a little too interested in padding their bills)

if you want to claim the money back then you should get a refferal letter from your gp 1st.

I had MRI of my Lumbar Spine at Concord MRI Diagnostic Centre in 73 Austin Road, TST.

Give them a ring to get a quote.
