    Vespa Servicing

    Hi there,

I am the proud new owner of a seven year old ex-Pizza delivery scooter that was passed to me. It's a Vespa PX200e. It does have a few mechanical issues (white smoke when starting, I think there may be fuel in the exhaust, and is sometimes reluctant to start, although it always does eventually). Once going it seems to be fine, although it does seem to use fuel fast - three trips from Central to Stanley and back emptied the tank.

Knowing nothing about these bikes and not having the time to learn myself, I'm looking to have a mechanic look at it or give it a service. I know that the dealer is in Kowloon. But can anybody recommend a trust-worthy mechanic on the Island who can service the bike for a fair price?

Pizza delivery bikes are thrashed like hell by the delivery boys, i have seen them do it, sliding into corners like if they were drving a professional drifting car LOL. also have a local friend who used to do it part time and he said the bikes were really bad. Hope you got it for a real cheap price.

Try this place in North point.

I always see 1 or 2 Vespas being repaired around a block called Lei Shun Court in Causeway Bay. There are 3-4 motorcycle/scooter repair places there.

Look for the set of buildings sandwitched between Haven Street and Caroline Hill Road.

    Google Maps

    Thanks Guys,

I'll check out both the North Point and the Causeway Bay places when I get the chance: will post back how I get on.

@wtbhotia: Yup, I got it for a song, less than half a song in fact. So no complaints from here about the issues with the bike. It's done almost 30k km and it's pretty battered, but it does still go which is all that counts.

hi there congrats on your new vespa px 200, you are clearly a man of style. the fuel consumption is a little on the high side, but still pretty normal considering the trip from central to stanley is round a bout 18kms if you're going over stubbs road. do that six times and it'll add up..
as for the white smoke this could be some unburnt fuel or a lack of two stroke oil, make sure the little indicator bleed by your feet has oil in it.

as far as servicing goes you should try "nice motors" in lung on street in wan chai its just up from the hopewell centre. no 7 i think. they are the vintage vespa specialists in hk, the owner is lai and he does the servicing himself, he is reasonable regarding prices and speaks good english. a basic service will be between 250-300 ( change plugs, oil, check brakes, set fuel mixture etc..) if brakes or sth similar needs to be replaced, it'll be a bit more, obviously. make sure you determine the price beforehand and if you plan on replacing parts make sure he keeps the old ones so you can see wether they really needed replacing. as for the difficulty starting, this is a common vespa problem and they often reguire a few kicks to get going, but cleaning the carb (they'll do this in the service) should help the matter along. the service should only take half a day or so and you'll have your baby back before you know it. i hope this helps!!

p.s i didn't attach a link to google maps for nice motors, because when i did that earlier they said my post was pending approval and it still hasn't appeared. you should find the place pretty easily though.

Just a quick update for anybody that has a Vespa.

Thanks to Mr Wolf for his recommendation. But I've been to Nice Motors and Mr Lai a couple of times now and I have to say that I won't be going back. The man is pleasant enough, but he is also dishonest. I say this because over the two times that I've given him work, he's claimed to have found and fixed problems that didn't exist. For example, the first time, he said that the oil hadn't been changed for years - I had actually changed it myself two weeks before. The second time he claimed that his brother had misunderstood my instructions and had replaced all kinds of engine seals. He played the injured party and made a big fuss over only charging "cost price", adding "you're very lucky"! Of course I told him to show me the replaced parts and suddenly he had lost them. I'd rather give my business to someone I trust who doesn't leave a bad feeling.

It seems finding an honest mechanic is as hard here as it is in many other places. There is a really awful place in North Point near North View Street or Cheung Hong St - complete rip-off artists. I've seen another place in North Point that looked more straightforward, so I'll update this post after using them.
