    Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand

    Hi!

Hoping to speak to people who've travelled in these countries and know the visa system? Have never been to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and would love to travel thru some of them.

First stop will prob be Thailand. Is it possible, once there, to get a travel visa to enter the other countries without too much bother? Can you just pass through on a

Its because I don't know exact dates etc yet of my travels or how far my money will get me... would be good to have a little bit of flexibility to. Any info or even just your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I was in Vietnam last weekend and you absolutely need a visa for vietnam. Last time i was in thailand (Aus/UK passport) I did not need a visa for tourism but did for Business so you should be fine. One of our party in Vietnam last week did not know they needed a visa and had awful problems at the airport, and in the conversation someone mentioned it was easy to get a vietnam visa in the airport in Bankok, so you might want to check this out as it is only heresay on my part. no idea about the others.

You don't need a visa to enter Thailand for a stay of up to a month. You will need visas for the other three countries. You can obtain these visas in a few days in BKK without any problems.

UK passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa (a ticket out of the country is required). Visas are required for Cambodia and Vietnam and am fairly sure for Laos too.

Unless things have changed recently (last 6 months) it is easy to sort out visa in Bangkok usually takes a few days. Try the Khao San Road (Banglampu area) Every other shop is a travel agent that organise flights/trains/buses/packages and visas for all around Asia and further afield.

If you are planning to travel on land, entering Cambodia from Thailand is straight forward by bus or train to the border, and then bus to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap (Angkor Wat area). From Cambodia you can travel on to Vietnam although I have not done this journey yet. Returning back to Bangkok from Vietnam via Laos would make for a great trip if you have time.

You need a visa for Cambodia, but you can always get it at the border or the airport (unless you are Malaysian or Singaporean, then you dont need any at all). If you take an overland crossing it may be better to get the visa in advance, or they may try to overcharge you.

You can get a tourist visa (15 days) for Vietnam at the Vietnam embassy on Wan Chai Road. Take around 3 days and will set you back about 300 HKD.
It's possible to get them on arrival at the airport (Ha Noi at least) but be prepared to pay extra and wait for a while.

I STRONGLY recommend you dont try and get at the airport in Vietnam. One of our party tried to do this, spent about 12 hours in the airport and another (influential vietnamese) member had to go and bail them out....

Cambodia, you can get a one month visa on arrival at the airport in Cambodia....it costs 20 USD and we only had to wait about 20 minutes for the whole process (most people on our flight were doing the same).

Thailand as people have pointed out, you can get a 30 day visa on arrival depending on which country you are from.

Can't help you with the other two as i havent been there.

Thanks for all the info guys! Really appreciate it. Good to know that the visas dont necessarily need to be got in advanced.

I've read on old threads that to get Vietnam visa in HK, need to nominate dates AND points of entry and exit?

Im a young guy (24, UK passport) and will be travelling myself until I meet others hence dont wanna hav set plans as I'd rather be able to go with good people if I meet any along the way... bit of a gamble, might not meet anyone wanting me tagging along!

Only gonna have a couple of weeks so dont know if its worth trying to rush through all 4 countries tho? Was thinking maybe concentrate on Laos and Cambodia as Ive read they are less commercialised?
