    Crossing the streets

When I was in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, I often wondered how a handicapped person managed to go across those main streets since both sides of the sidewalks were blocked off by barriers to prevent pedestrians from jaywalking. Even each end of the block was fenced in. Obviously a handicapped person cannot not drive his wheelchair up on to the sky walkways but on the other hand, I failed to find any escalators or elevators nearby (like we have in Hong Kong).

We walked more than 10 blocks (by going up and down the sky walkways) and every single block had barriers from one end of the street to the other. NO crosswalk at all even at the end of each block. If a person is on a wheelchair how can he even go one block without going up the sky walkway or going down to the subway which has stairs only? You haven't noticed that issue when you were in Guangzhou?

In Hong Kong Central there are several blocks that have sky walkway but elevators are nearby to assist the handicapped to gain access to the sky walkway but NONE that I am aware of in those two cities in China.

Oh well, universal design in general is still quite an alien concept in PRC.

The chinese don't care much about the disabled. So they be in a car (no walking) or never get to leave home if no car. Public transport does not cater to them either. Much like the UK 30 yrs ago.
